I'm going to try to give you the serious/"correct answer," so give this some thought.
In most of the eastern tradations, in their more advanced forms (that less than 1% of the total people within the "religion" do) they have a meditation practice designed to allow you to reach your "soul or essence." (and perhaps do more).
All the modalities end up overlapping in various ways since they are based off of the same realities, but I am the most familiar with the taoist approach, so I'm going to try to answer your question through that one.
Human beings are essentialy composed of a series of bodies which are centered around an individuals actual physical body. Each body is a higher system controlling the body below it, and is larger and more diffused.
The taoist meditation goal is to become aware of each of your individual bodies, and then clear them out of all the junk they have accumulated.
The main problem however lies in the fact each asscending body is much harder to percieve than the one before it (I guess you could say they get progressively subtler). Most people have difficultly feeling inside their physcial body, and being able to feel energy or see it (basically the 2nd body) is not all that common in my country (the US).
Anyhow, to skip ahead a bit, the best terms I know for the 8 bodies are
1) Physical
2) Etheric/Aura/Basic Energy
3) Emotional (if you gain the ability to feel the energy of emotions that would be something in this realm)
4) Mental
5) Psychic (this is where all the "paranormal" things start surfacing)
6) Causality/Karma
7) Soul/Individuality
8) Dao (I suppose you could say god as well)
Sadly, reaching the 7th is pretty hard and rare (a handful in each generation do it), but if you honenestly want an answer for where the soul resides that would be it. I've been working at this for ages, have a very good teacher, was born with natural talent, and at this point in time I can sometimes percieve the 5th, so I doubt I'll ever reach the 7th.
However, this isn't a Taoist sermon, I'm just trying to give an actual answer to your question. Once you can become aware of the more subtle essences composing your being, you can just take it as a given that a couple more steps down the road is your "soul."
Hope that helps!

If we follow Guru Avatar we will all be lost. Bogus guru. Everyone wants to be guru but has no qualification. In a nut shell We the eternal Soul resides within our heart and permeates the entire body.We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can return to the eternal Kingdom where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy. You can find yourself (soul) I did.
For info. Go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita- As it is by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada asitis.com you can read it on line.

My soul is a factor of my actions and reactions.
Instinctively, elements such as values morals etc. come into effect before I make an action/reaction to things.
I could say my soul and my conscience play into effect; which helps contemplate my thoughts, and develop my persona as well.
Religious or not, I believe everyone has a soul. A soul, is YOU. Your ideas, beliefs, personality traits, thoughts, feelings, and anything else that comes together that makes a person who they are as an individual.

My soul is spiritual, not physical, so it doesn't reside in a physical place like the heart or liver. It resides in the Spiritual world, which isn't a place.

Our soul atman resides in our heart... the prime reason why the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman that seems to come from within our heart always guides us on the right path. Traveling the path of absolute truthfulness one can distinctly hear the voice of our soul atman... never otherwise!
The soul atman of every living being resides in the heart. As long as the heart beats... the body survives. The moment our soul atman leaves the heart... the body decays and dies! It is our soul atman that has manifested the body to work out its karma... remove the impurities... the dross within. Our soul atman is the absolute master and controller of the body.
Governed by the voice of our soul atman... Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) in their lifetime! Right from the first manifestation as an amoeba (single cell formation) and to the last as human beings... the cosmic crux of life is our soul atman gaining liberation from the cycle of birth and death forever.
No sooner the soul atman regains its original pure pristine form... it gains entry into the abode of God... the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). Gaining enlightenment and finally salvation (moksha) is the ultimate goal of every soul atman. Whether we do it now or many manifestations henceforth is the sole prerogative of every human being.
Human form is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle! Only as humans can the soul atman within regain its original pure pristine form... liberate from the cycle of birth and death forever... never otherwise! Never from heaven (Swarga in Hinduism) or hell (Naraka in Hinduism) can the soul atman gain direct entry into the kingdom of God.
For the soul atman to get liberated... it needs a cosmic sojourn of 96.4 million earthly years... a total of 8.4 million manifestations on the whole! The initial 7.3 million manifestations are spent in the insect, plant and animal form. In the human form alone we have 1.1 million manifestations for human beings to reach the stage of enlightenment and salvation.
The moment one reaches the 8.4 millionth manifestation... all is over for the soul atman within! Journey in the human form is the most pleasant experience for the soul atman within. Guided by the voice of our soul atman and the power of discrimination bestowed on mankind by God Almighty... human beings finally cross the ocean of Samsara (worldly life)! In a cloudy land with black, rocky terrain. The sounds you hear are the wind, the voices singing, and something that sounds like hissing. A place with gargantuan snakes, static, where shadows can kill you, and I am covered in your blood.
