As this story begins to unfold i can see this happening. Boras has had talks with who he thinks will buy the cubs. The report is 30 mil over the next 10 seasons.. however a rod would have a part of the ownership if the cubs get him.We all know that players like a rod and griffey would like to play for lou again. This would be about as big as the soriano deal was if not bigger.Griffey even has mention that he would play for lou cheap if the cubs were interested.

Cubs are about to be sold so there is no way A Rod could get a piece of the team. It is a nice fairy tale though. There is some rule where players can't have a piece of the team. It is related to a very old rule where an owner can't manage the team. Ted Turner tried way back when. A Rod could get 30 mil a year and with the Cubs shelling out big bucks for Soriano an new owner won't make a big splash like that.

I have heard that too and it doesn't make sense. First of all, Boras should not be negotiating with anyone other than the Yankees right now, because it would be tampering on the part of the other party. Until A-Rod opts out, he is under contract to the Yankees, and Boras would be breaking rules if he were to talk with another team, even if it's who he thinks will buy the Cubs. That just doesn't make sense. There's no way Boras is sitting around saying "Hey, so you may buy the Cubs. When you do, is it OK for you to sign A-Rod to an insane contract and make him part-owner?". Not happening.

Second, A-Rod cannot be a player and have partial ownership in the team. That's always been against MLB rules. A-Rod would have partial ownership after he retires, not while he is an active player.

I've heard this story and it just sounds like some reporter has an active imagination.

I could see it happening also. However, I do NOT think there are any discussions yet. First of all, the story can't be accurate, because it said they're discussing an ownership role, and that is against the rules. No ownership stake in a team can be part of any MLB contract. Second, he would have to go back to shortstop and he said he would rather stay at third base rather than re-learn SS all over again. But the Cubs do have the rsources to do this if they wanted to. The other reason I don't think it will happen is that by the time a new owner is in place to approve such a huge expenditure, A-Rod would be gone probably. If he opts out, which I think he will, the Red Sox and the Angels will be interested, along with the Dodgers and Yankees.

Agent Scott Boras certainly was but the Yankees didn't seem particularly worked up over a magazine story that reported Boras already has discussed contract parameters for Alex Rodriguez with a leading contender to buy the Chicago Cubs. The deal as reported eventually could net A-Rod - who can opt out of his Yankees contract this winter - an ownership stake in the team.

A team official said while the Yanks are discounting the validity of the story in New York magazine, they are planning to send a letter to commissioner Bud Selig reminding him that if any such engagement between Boras and a potential Cubs buyer took place, that would automatically disqualify that prospective buyer from purchasing the team.

Boras adamantly denied the story. "Great players with great demand create great rumors," he said. ". . . I have not talked to anyone."

Boras also pointed out that it would violate MLB rules for a player to have even potential equity in a franchise.

Baseball spokesman Rich Levin said yesterday that the commissioner was "unaware of the story."

One MLB source surmised that outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who has submitted a bid to buy the Cubs but appears unlikely to be approved, was the source of the A-Rod item. The magazine didn't cite the potential owner in question but reported specifically that Cuban was not the leading contender. The leading group is said to be fronted by John Canning, the CEO of Chicago-based Madison-Dearborn Partners and a close friend of Selig.

Before yesterday's game, Rodriguez called the story "nonsense."

That would be tampering with contracted talent. He could get in trouble for that.
