Most of it is. I do like rappers like Common, Kanye, & Talib Kweli though b/c they have something positive & concious to say, but you're right....rap music is generally sending the wrong message.
When 50 cent & Kanye's album came out this month there was a bet on who would sell the most. So far I hear it's Kanye. Even the white girl at the checkout counter said "ooohh I want to get this CD, Kanye is selling more", when I bought mine.
So maybe ppl are becoming more concious & want to hear more than just good beats.

Honestly, It is! You are right, rap music used to excite people to have a voice and have a cause. Today's rap music filled with bling- bling, over crowded with drug usage, and over flowing with sex. Its purely just entertainment! I think this is the part we are missing.
Do I still listen to rap music? Yes? Do I believe in it, does it influence me in any way, does it have a cause? NO, its just entertainment. Some people don't have the mental capacity to accept it for what it is! And our poor youth are being brain washed into believing this is how life really is and how it should be. When those rappers are done talking about putting a bullet in someone, selling drugs, and having unprotected sex with a "10," they go home to their nice plush homes, have cocktails with their "boys," and plot on the next concoction to increase their sells. (Vitamin water, Gin, etc!) I really want our youth to take it for what it is, entertainment. When their is a song that has a positive message believe in it, if not just bounce to the beat shortie! lol

interesting quesiton, as usual. i have to admit: sometimes when your having a bad day and people are pissing you off, it feels good to pop in Jay-Z's black album and bounce to 'Poppin' Tags' or some other materialistic song about spending money that most of us will never earn. however degrading the lyrics to some of these songs are, like you said, even mature people like to rock to the beat, not the words.
but i would have to agree, that i can't relate to the lyrics of most rap music: i've never sold drugs, never gang-banged (or banged anything else for that matter) i've never even test-drove anything hotter than a Honda Civic, and i don't have anything that 'blings' any brighter than my wedding ring. the only shorties in my 'crib' are my kids and i have never partied like a rock-star. forgive me for being so square that i don't know what to think about a 'soldier boy' or how to 'lean wit it, rock wit it'....
there is inteligent rap that i absolutely love. i love the way it makes me think about deep topics or the way it makes me feel: songs like Commons' anti-abortion song with Lauryn Hill and Jay-Z's song "Minority Report" about the Hurricane Katrina political fiasco. Mos Def's music is up-lifting, inspirational and intelligent.
but yes, over-all, i guess rap is rather obnoxious. especially Kanye's new music which is basically ALL about Kanye....i just don't get it....

Yeah RAP is and always has been trash.
Hip-hop is and always will be the truth.
Listen to some:
• Little Brother
• MF Doom
• Immortal Technique
• Madlib
• Jay Dilla
• Slum Village (lot of skirt chasing, but good music)
• Strange Fruit Project
• The Roots
• Talib Kweli

Yes, I agree most rap music today is obnoxious. Unfortunately, the "obnoxious" rap music is somehow the forefront of all Black music. Who am I kidding? I think we all know why it's at the forefront of other music. Who's buying it? Right...
"Obnoxious" rap makes the most money, so who's the real sell out? Although, I don't think rap music is mostly responsible for a child's behavior. The parents who leave it up to rap music and TV to raise their child are the one's responsible.

I agree. Rap nowadays is not about the message anymore. I listen to the lyrics of some of those songs and I wonder "Do these kids even know what they're listening to?" It's horrible. The beats have gotten pretty bad, too.

i agree wholeheartedly. And by combining that message with good beats, young people take it in like oxygen, thinking that by selling drugs, not abiding by the law, and treating women disrespectfully, they'll be as opulent and affluent as these big name rap stars. Granted not all rap is like this, just the kind the most people know about. But if the GOOD rap was more well known, rap being obnoxious would not be a problem.

Yes that's why I can't listen to it all day or even watch it. 50 Cent's "I Get Money" disgusts me for some reason. I mean what else can he really rap about besides money, cars, and girls.
By the way if you don't like it change the channel or change the station. No one is forcing you to watch or listen to music you hate. IF you don't want your kids to watch it simply don't sit them in front of a tv all day or take away their cable.

To walk with God we can't walk with satan. I love the beats, but I am an adult and no to justify listening to rap that may contain innappropriate lyrics, but my main concern are the dumb butt kids who don't have any better sense and they do absorb what they hear.
Just look at the state of filth and immorality in the world today. It is the new generation that's bringing morals and values at an all time low.
Stinkies..
