Here's a link with the classic granny square. I've made many variations, but this one is simple and the added chain stitch between reps help the square to lay even.

Here is the sc ripple pattern. I made one of these a few years ago.

As for the poncho pattern....did you want one for children or adults?

Well, here's the link for the ponchos from Crochet Pattern Central (I've used many of the patterns they have posted and they all work up well and without errors.)

I have made many single crochet ponchos by using granny squares. I just join the squares into a square, leaving the center open to pull it over my head. Just don't join the four center squares for the opening. I hope you understand this. It's kind of hard to explain without seeing it in person. Try crochetcabana.com for ripple pattern help or lionbrand.com has a pattern called Very Easy Ripple Shawl.

You can find so much if you do a google search for free crochet patterns!

about.com has some good patterns. Type in "Bev's Country Cottage" in a google search.

crochetpatterncentral.com is good too.

try michaels, they usually have free patterns in their yarn section. The local library has always been my best source for patterns. look in the craft and hobby section. try marymaxim, they are a mail order store that I have dealt with for years, they hane many poncho kits. try these links .hope it helps!
