In my life I'm had at least a dozen instruments that I've played very well or played around with and didn't play so well and the only one that I ever gave a personal name to was the used tenor sax I bought back in the 70s. She was (and still is) Miss Sophie Conn and she's the only one that I've kept all these years. (Not that it's related in some weird way but it seems like every car or truck I've ever owned and driven I've given personal names to.) EDIT: When I was married we had a baby grand that both my wife and I simply called 'Baby.' That was the piano's nickname. I'm not sure who first gave it that name but I don't count this because I never considered that piano a personal instrument. It was bought for her use. EDIT 2: I liked the name Sophie because of Sophie Tucker. Conn is the brand name of the sax. And right now I’m driving Cherokee Kitty, a ferocious female feline of a Jeep with an attitude. I also have an antique VW van named Cliburn.

I don't think it's illegal to name a musical instrument. People name all sorts of things.
The bigger question is: why would you want to?
I mean, what are you going to do, name your tuba Tubby? Then what? You tell people I gotta go, it's time to play with Tubby?
Personally, I like the French horn.
