Almost like clockwork as soon as i rolled over 125,000miles it begun. Started out with some bad hesitation until finally It wouldnt start. It cranks but wont fire, pretty strong smell of gas as well. If it sits a few days 3-4 it'll fire up after a little coaxing.

Smelled the dipstick and it had a very strong odor of gas. Thinking I had a leak I eventually got down into the upper intake and there was a nice little glistening pool of gasoline sitting on the intake right below the pressure regulator (#6 cylinder i believe)

I've checked/replaced most of the regular items (60-61psi from the pump) and wont be able to get to the auto store until later this week, but could that little puddle be the cause of my hesitation/no start woes?

I did get the following codes as well

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

Spark is present, also replaced plugs/wires/distributor cap/fuel relay/fuel filter. Compression is ok.

P0300- indicates problems with the fuel injectors. DO NOT start this car . change the oil and filter . fuel cuts oil or thins it out .running your motor like this can cause /cost you in the long run. P0420 is the oxygen sensor not picking up combusted fuel.have a compression test run on your engine.
if you have poor compression your engine will not run correctly or at all. three things to make a motor run
fuel pressure
cylinder compression
spark

You say inside the upper intake, gas was pooling around the fuel pressure regulator. This leads me to believe you have a 4.3 Vortec with a CFI injection system. When you take the upper intake off, it has the injector and pressure regulator in the center, with 6 lines going to the cylinders. At the end of each of those lines is a poppet that requires 51 psi fuel pressure to open. These are well known for heat inside the upper intake making the plastic fuel lines, injector lines, and poppets become brittle and break. They are also bad for failing fuel pressure regulators. The codes you have are right in line with a bad CFI 'spider' they call it. It is kind of expensive if you have to pay to have one put in. If you got that far on your own though, it pretty much just snaps in. Not real hard to do at all. I would not just attempt to replace the regulator. I would replace the whole assembly and keep yourself out of that intake for another 125,000 miles.

When a fuel pressure regulator goes bad,the vacuum line attached will draw fuel and cause a good gas smell under the hood.Check all vacuum hoses for air tightness.

You've got an ignition problem.

When attempting to start the truck, all the unburned fuel makes it's way past the rings into the oil.

The little puddle of gas is probably from the same "no spark" issue from continualy trying to start it..

Next time it fails to start, or dies on you, check for spark.
