I would have to say anything that he can either push or ride on because he is getting at that age where he likes to get up and go like fisher price toys. They don't cost that much and there's one that he can either ride on, push and it also comes with blocks that the hippo can eat when the blocks are on the floor.
I got that for my daughter for her first birthday and her cousin that's about 3mths younger than her had fun with it.

I would talk to his parents and see what he needs. Some kids have so many toys that the parents would appreciate clothes more.
My nephew's first birthday is next month and we have been telling everyone to buy clothes over toys. He already has so many toys that he doesn't play with. It is starting to get cold and he doesn't have a lot of warmer outfits yet.
For toys- anything Leap Frog is pretty much educational. Baby Einstein too.

I hate to be the party-pooper here, but my son turns one in a couple weeks, and I want everyone to get him clothes. The clothes they get for the baby shower often don't fit after the first six months and by age one, the wardrobe can be quite thinned out. You'll probably find that most people will bring a toy, but the mom and dad will really appreciate a size 12M-18M outfit.

At age 1 they are still in diapers you could get diapers or training pants for the future. Also a diaper cake you could make 1 or buy 1. It is a different gift plus the mom can still use the diapers. and you can put toys or books in it. For a bedtime story.

I love the Little Touch Leap Pad... it is made by leap frog, and is super educational, helps hand eye coordination, and gives baby a chance to look at books with his parents. My daughter loves hers (She still uses that at 3, but also uses My first leap pad now..) Anything leap frog is awesome!
