The written word has a lot of power. Alot of people think that everything they read is true, like the people who read the enquirer and think that that is real. They think that people wouldn't right it down if it wasn't true. The people who want to ban books know how powerful books can be because they give people ideas and make them think and they don't want anyone to think differently then they do. Personally when I here that people want a book banned I read it to see what they think is do bad. So I think they are defeating their own pupose by asking for a ban because it just increases public interest in the book they want to ban.

Beliefs. Take Harry Potter for example. Religious people believe that allowing their children to read about witchcraft and make it seem to their children that witchcraft is good, is wrong. Other believe differently, and say, like you, that they are just books.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or Huckleberry Finn or whatever the title is, is also on the banned list, because of the prejudice in the book. The author - Mark Twain? - says that the prejudice is wrong, but people still want it to be a banned book. However, opinions are not enough to create laws, as everyone's opinions are different.

Yes, yes, some very good books, have been on the banned list or the challenged which is very close to banned. It is merely because people believe that perfectly alright books shouldn't be read by anybody, just because they don't like them or think they are appropriate. Well, JK Rowling has said (actually I believe she qouted someone else, but I forgot who) that it is an honor to her to be on the challenged list year after year after year- or something of that variation. Actually, if it's banned or challenged, it just makes people more curious and they go to read it anyhow. I'd be honored if that happened to something I wrote- to think people would be paying that much attention to it, even if it's because they want to ban it? Well, attention is attention and you can never have bad publicity! (well you can have bad publicity, but that's not the point and is a whole different subject!)

Ah, all good books are on the "banned books" list. Seriously. I doubt you could name one book on a middle school reading list that isn't on that list. My personal theory is that it's created by a group of insane mothers out to protect their precious little children from the atrocity that is Harry Potter. What annoys me is that most people who are against a certain book haven't read it because that would be "hypocritical." So, ya. All the great authors of all time have their books on the banned books list. I'm not even sure where I could find that list... It would be a fun think to look at.

Because they are generally narrow minded and controlling. They are concerned that certain reading material will have a derogatory impact on a person. However, it is proven that reading merely expands one's knowledge. Not everyone reads "meanings" into every book they pick up to enjoy.

Many people are afraid about what will happen if others are allowed to think for themselves. Others are so dazzled by their own self-importance that they think they know what's best for everybody else. The ones who really bug me are the ones who read a segment of a book and want to ban it without getting the whole picture

they could go against religion or insult someone or teach something that is wrong or a person might not like. also it could be against certain rules. it just depends on the person you are refering to. not all books are wanted banned but the ones people think are bad (religious, fantast , magic, fairy tale, etc. )

It may seem stupid to you, but to others it isn't. So just as I am sure you would like people to respect you and your opinions, offer the same to others.

And as for them being "just books", I am reminded of what Abraham Lincoln said to Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. "So you are the little lady who started this great big war." You may not believe it, but the written word can have a profound affect on people. But I think you feel that way because you just haven't read enough to understand that .Pax - C

Books influence the way people think. If you say a book is "just" a book, clearly you've never read one.

Because the people that want to ban books are stupid Democrats that's why! They wanted to ban Summer of my German soldier because it was racial for using the word ***** and " too sexual" for young readers because of one brief kiss! What they should be doing is getting their heads out of the ground and start banning the Harry Potter books because of the wizardry that are making kids believe in wizards and witches! At least Summer of my German soldier was about real things not stupid magic and spells! Good grief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
