William "Smokey" Robinson Jr., baby. Not only did he write many, many, many of the songs that absolutely define Motown for such luminaries as The Temptations, the 4 Tops, Mary Wells and so many others, but his singing voice could melt the polar ice caps. His lyrics have done more to bring black and white together than all the civil rights activists in history, and his personality is so fun and infectuous that even now, in his '60s, he remains the quentessential entertainer. Smokey Robinson will go down in music history as one of its most vitally important pioneers.
To Sam Spade: I'm a fan of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes too, but they were on that Philly Soul label rather than Motown.
