A narcissist is a person who is more concerned with themselves and their appearance, education, athletic ability and in fact every aspect of their lives than they are in others'.
However if a narcissist know he/she is one, that is very helpful, and they can work on looking away from the 'mirror' and out toward other people, always a plus if one desires companionship and more all around easy-going comfort in life. It's too hard to keep narcissism going for the long stretch; a person just can't stay at the top of their game all the time. So... recognition first, then work to look away from self. And then a good time is had by all.

The term is quite insulting to apply to anyone and I assume that you weren't looking for a psychological definition.
The narcissist is one who might be considered self-involved thinking about themselves without little regard for others. The term is useful though in trying to control the behaviours of others. As we both have the same social view that this term is not favourable, I could use it to manipulate you. By labelling you a narcissist, I can go about trying to get you to do what I want rather than what you want.

A narcissist is someone who, internally, has very low self-esteem. To the world they want to present the opposite. They obsess over what people think of them. They usually suck the self esteem out of those closest to them and generally make other people feel inferior in an effort to build that perfect image. They love to have admiration and generally only associate with those who do admire them.

Narcissist--Noun: Someone in love with themselves.
Narcissus--A flowing plant that if eaten may cause vomiting.
In Greek mythology, Narcissist was a handsome young lad and the son of the river-god Cephissus. Because of his great beauty, many women fell in love with him, but he pushed back their advances. Among the lovelorn maidens was the nymph Echo, who lost her voice to the angry Hera, jealous wife of Zeus. Hera condemned her to never speak except what was spoken to her. One day, Narcissist was walking through the woods and became lost so he shouted, "Is anyone here?" Echo joyfully resounded, "Is anyone here, here, here?" Narcissist became excited and called out, "Come!" Echo answered honestly, "Come, come." And echo stepped forward with outstretched arms. Narcissist cruelly refused to accept Echo's love. She was so humiliated that she hid in a cave and wasted away until nothing was left of her but her voice. To punish Narcissist for his deed, the avenging god Nemesis made Narcissist fall hopelessly in love with his own reflection. As Narcissist gazed at his image in a pool, he found that he was unable to pull himself away from his own beautiful reflection. He stayed that way until he died. At the place where his beautiful body lain grew a lovely flower, honoring the name and memory of Narcissus.

If I remember correctly, Narcissis was a character who fell in love with his own reflection. He would stand endlessly at a mirror to admire himself. In short, it is someone who sees only themselves in situations and is the center of attention (at least in their own mind).

Narcissus was a Greek character who was totally in love with himself. He couldn't stop looking at his reflection, and it became his downfall.
A narcissist is one who emanates Narcissus; one who loves no one but himself (or herself) to a fault, and no one else.

Some one who thinks he is the prettiest. And when the years have gone by, he can still say: I am ' the greatest'.
