Pity and compassion are not the same thing. Pity is what motivates one to help another. When someone is helping you it is out of their pity for you. When you are helping another, it is your pity for them that causes your behaviour.

Pitying a newcomer to the country (legal or illegal) is not something that I would engage in.

You have no need to feel sorry for me, and I won't feel sorry for you.

only in extreme cases. when no other way can possibl work or has already been unsucessfuly tried.
