Many actions may only have a short term effect -- but it's almost impossible to eliminate any long term consequences (at least as far as quantum theory holds).

For example -- whether I have lunch at Arby's or La Cirq has a short term effect on my digestion, and my wallet. But whether that one event has any long term effect -- who knows....?

Sometimes we do know -- or find out later - if I ran into someone at the restraunt (or didn't) -- if I got into an accident (or didn't) -- if I got food poisoning (or didn't) -- but aside from a few shots in the dark, it may not have any effect long term at all.

That is not, obviously, true of everything -- just some things.
