Been there, done that! I got my degree in applied communication when I was 21 and worked in radio for a while before taking a government job. I stayed mainly for the pay and benefits. But, I was depressed, disliked the work, couldn't stand my manipulative and anal manager, etc.
After about 2 years, I was told I needed to use all of my vacation leave right away because of a change in HR. I had about 5 weeks saved up and took that as well as a bit of unpaid leave and booked a trip to Europe. While there, I was really able to look at my life and goals objectively without work, friends and family to influence me.
When I went back to work, I was feeling 10 times better. I had a new look on my life - I needed to work to live and not live to work. Work was NOT my life. So, I decided to save as much money as I could for a year and during that year I would make plans for my next step. I cut a lot of unnecessary purchases out of my life - I stopped buying magazines and morning tea, I brought my lunch to work, started taking the bus, etc. I saved as much as I could.
During the year I also did a lot of research. I bought a book that was filled with tests, quizzes and questions that helped me decide where I wanted to go with my life. I talked to friends and family to see what they thought my strong points (and weaknesses) were. I ended up applying for (and getting!) a job in Poland! I quit my job in 2005 and moved to Europe.
This was the best thing I have EVER done in my life. I was 24 and was homesick, lost, you name it. But it was the best experience and I've grown and changed SO much. I eventually moved to Prague to work there. Last year I arrived back in Canada and feel like I've accomplished so much. I've got an opportunity to work in Africa next year and will probably take it.
That was a lot longer than I meant for it to be! My point is that you really need to take some time to figure out what you want to do. Do you want to be 80 and look back and all you can say is that you were miserable in a job for 30 years? So you have benefits - so what? Yes, that's great but if you don't have a family, mortgage, major responsibilities, then there's more to life than just a job - especially one that makes you miserable.
If you really can't quit, start saving your money. Do some volunteer work and start casually looking for a new job. Take some time off work to get some perspective, even if it's just at home for a week. Get a hobby! During that year of saving, etc, I started taking djembe (an African hand drum) lessons and yoga classes. Having something to look forward to outside of work is really beneficial as well. At least then you're not concentrating solely on work.
Don't worry - it will get better! But you need to actively work towards changing your life because it's not going to just happen to you - you really do have to make your life happen! Good luck!!

Don't feel depressed. A lot of people in the world go through these things. Try to look for jobs on the internet, and your local newspaper. Try getting a job that doesn't include graphics if you don't like it. Just get one ASAP, and when you eventually pay your bills and become steady, find a job that suits you.

Well Dana you can get out and try and socialize and network with people who are in the job that you are trained for. As well if you have any hobbies you can also join a group of like minded people and you never know who you might meet to help you reach your life goals. Sometimes we all have to begin at something other than what we are educated for, but keep sending out resumes as well and eventually a job posting with your name on it will come your way if you continue to have and show confidence in yourself and your abilities. Best of luck in reaching your life goals.

There is nothing that says you cannot hunt a job while employed. Now you can search for your dream job and you don't have to be picky about it. Your employer doesn't have to know you are looking!
