S waves have the larger amplitude.

Ground motions consists of compression and shear forces, or longitudinal and transverse (I think that's what you're asking)

I don't want to really answer this as I am sure you were taught something much simpler than the real answer. The energy released is logarithmic but the base is 32, not 10, so a two unit increase is actually about 900 times more energy.

Unconsolidated soils are subject to something called liquefaction, which can be more destructive.

Shear ( S ) wave and Raleigh ( R ) wave will have largest amplitudes.
Vertical & harizondal movements.
1024 times more energy and 100 times more shaking.
Building in solid rock is safer than that on loose soil because of the amplification factor and liquifications.
