I have the same problem, bunny ears work the best (or easiest to start with). I have twin 7 year old girls, one got it pretty easy and the other is having much difficulty. Good luck !

If the child is having trouble, stand facing the 7 year old and tie the shoe and have him/her repeat what you just did. If the child is left-hand dominant, it's hard for him/her to tie shoes the way you do. It appears "backward" but it's not really.

Take a piece of bright colored construction paper and punch holes in it like on a shoe or sneaker.
Put in a shoelace and let him/her practice (with your assistance, of course).
It is a different perspective on the learning project and may entice the 7 year old learn much more quickly.
Oh....and don't pressure him/her. Make it FUN.

Repetition is the key. Show them,have them try to do it. Over and over again until they get it right. Not for hours,but say half an hour a day. They also need to practice on their own and for that they need an incentive,like offering to take them to a movie "to celebrate" once they get it right.

take the first loop and say there once was a tree the tree grew then a snake (the other string) came and wrapped itself around the tree and crawled under the tree , the tree fell (pull the two loops together) and killed the snake wa la the shoe is tied. kids love this*

I am trying to show my 5 year old the same thing.
I say "Cross, tuck, pull, loop, cross, tuck, pull"
And it's starting to work. She's gotten it a couple times.
