Yes, quite right. Not really that surprising when you consider that much of the traditional Dem power base was in the South at that time (and for much of the 20th Century as well).
Northern Democrats , prior to the war, had many powerful political allies among southerners of the same party. Some of them viewed emancipation as Lincoln trying to stir up trouble and favored just putting the problem off.

I suggest you research into some of the very reasonable objection to emancipation via Presidential Proclamation. If a modern President suggested depriving an entire class of industry of its most valuable assets via Decree, I'm sure "property rights" advocates from the GOP would be quite vocal in condemnation of such an act.
The more radical portion of the pre-war Republican Party included lovely folks like John Brown. He acted to foment a slave rebellion, supply slaves with guns and ammunition, and encourage them to kill ALL southern whites -- women, children, and poor laborers, not just plantation owners. Are you suggesting that this was good thing, a position that deserved support?
History consists of complex sets of inter-related facts, not isolated factoids.

Yep, but according to some on here, somewhere in the 60's the Dems and Repubs switched seats and the Dems became Repubs and the Repubs became Dems. Apparently, being on the wrong side of history so many times made the Dems so mad they started rewriting it.

Yeah- everything the dims have their fingerprints on turns to sh*t-
Civil rights act destroyed black families and enslaved poor people to meager welfare hands outs.
Hell the only way they could win WWII was to kill 300,000 innocent civilians but they still have the nerve piss and moan because some low life scum is forced to wear underwear on his head.
Imagine socialized medicine-nine mile long lines to see a doctor who is only there because of affirmative action-Christ I can't wait.
