I am a long time 49ers fan and moved to FL a few years back. I just started watching the niners again consistently since I got the time to do it again and they seem to be on TV more often. I like what Nolan has done so far. The team looks better every year, but Alex Smith I don't get. What do the 49ers see on him. I have seen him on two games so far this year, and I can't see him being a winning QB in the NFL. Am I missing something? I mean, isn't this his third year?

all_agent_ramirez, I am not a fair weather fan, the only reason I did not watch was because my job would not allow it me time to do it. I travel a lot. Besides in FL they don't show their games all the time. And believe me. I know A LOT about the NFL, I can's almost assure you, Alex Smith is not the future. You can keep this message and look me up again in a couple of season. Don't mess with a real 49er fan, and don't force me to teach you football.

I hope all you guys who defend him are right. including Ramirez. I just don't know that much about him. I did not even know he was so young. I don't mind being wrong as long as the team starts winning. I thought the same of Romo, but this season he has impressed me a lot. Go 49ers. Too bad some of you guys missed the Montana days. The best QB ever.

If you know anything about the NFL, much less football,
you should know some guys transition easily, (Reggie Bush) a lot of it may have to do with their postion/duties, and others take time to transist into the NFL, mostly quarterbacks..... Just watch Peyton Manning from his 3rd NFL season....... Alex Smith will not only be just fine, but will be a solid leader in the coming years who will take the Niners to the playoffs

No and No. Smith is not the future, but there is not a sufficiently talented quarterback available to the Niners this year. Bradford and Claussen are the only real stars available, and they will both be long gone before the Niners pick. It would not be worth it to trade both of their 1st round picks to move up, either. They should use the picks on some O-line and secondary help and just tough it out with Smith under center. The good news is that if you have a good team overall, you don't need a great QB to succeed. For example: Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer have both won Super Bowls in the last decade. And Rex Grossman, Kerry Collins, and Jake Delhomme have all gotten to the big game. Smith isn't a great QB, but he's the best they can do right now. And that may be okay for now.

I hear ya man, I hear ya.
Just be patient. Here's a reassuring fact for you-
Smith 2005 QB Rating - 40.8
Smith 2006 QB Rating - 74.8
This was the most dramatic improvement in a QB rating in NFL history. He's getting better, he's also 22 years old which makes him the youngest QB in the NFL. It wouldn't at all hurt him either if his WR would catch more of their passes.
I liked what I saw today when they played Pitt, and I think if it hadn't been for the refs on crack, that game would have been a lot closer.
Do you remember when Jeff Garcia first played for SF? I was furious, I hated him, I bitched about him every Sunday, and then all of a sudden he's in two probowls. Now looking back Jeff Garcia is probably my second favorite QB of all time behind Young. (that I watched, I was too young to see Montana).
I can tell you this, I remember watching the game that ended Young's career and since then I've been wondering who would step up. Excluding a brief glimmer from Garcia, I've sat through total crap for nearing a decade now. I remember the rough days for Garcia, the rough days of Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey, the unimaginably horrible days of Rick Mirer, so trust me when I tell you that Smith looks promising. His improvement is astounding (record breaking) and I not only hope that he will come through, but I believe it.
That is why I as a long time 49ers fan think Alex Smith is the future.
Go 9ers

I feel the same way. The Niners are banking on him growing into his position still, even after 3 years he's still the youngest QB in the league. He seems pretty small for an NFL QB but he's quick, although the offensive plays the 9ers call don't utilize his speed very much. He sort of reminds me of Jeff Garcia.
I think the loss of Norv Turner at offensive coordinator really hurt Smith, because he was better at calling plays that utilized Smith's speed who seems more comfortable out of the pocket.
