Good question...many of us gen-xers have been asking ourselves the same thing ("why did we like this so much"). I think a lot of it has to do with the upbeat, active rhythms. It was a refreshing change of music from the 70s rock. Also, the ridiculous music videos with weird imagery and references added to the exotic flavour of the music. It was just "so different" from classic rock, disco, and pop. It had a sort of philosophical spin to it, even when the artists had no intention of conveying any meaningful ideas.

Coz it was cool, listenable and dancable, I still listen to it and enjoy it :-)
