Install the router near the desktop. In order to set up the router, you must have a computer connected to it. Also, your Internet connection is probably nearby.
Your work laptop might not need any software. If it has a wireless interface, it will see your new network when you set it up.

Unless your wireless is set up on the laptop, you will never get it to connect. Talk to your IT people and ensure this will work. Set up the router using the web based interface, not the disk. You can do this from any machine via a cable. Once you have a wired connection that works set up the encryption. then you can get the wireless connection.

You connect the router to your desktop pc through the Ethernet cable. It is fairly easy, but you have to configure your router. To get to the router settings, you type in http://192.168.1.1 in your internet browser. Do a search on this, since it can get a little confusing. Your laptop will automatically find the service and connect, as long as you have not put in a WEP password on your router.

Check and see if your laptop has built in wireless networking. I have a wireless router hooked up to my home pc and am able to access the internet with my laptop without any extra software.

Your source for access to the internet plugs into the router.
Then the desktop plugs in with a cat5 cable or usb cable.
The laptop can use wifi to connect or a cat 5 cable, which is faster.
You can program the router with any computer that is plugged into it.

Call Netgear's tech support for help and they will walk you through it. I did and it was easy with their help. I believe you have 30 days of free help but check your router box for the info or go on line.

You can use either one, just make sure it is connected to the router via ethernet cable.
