Born on Oct. 28, 1955, Gates grew up in Seattle. Gates attended public elementary school. By age 9 he had read every volume of the 1960 World Book Encyclopedia. In 7th grade his parents sent him to Lakeside Private School in hopes it would be more challenging for their son’s intellectual drive. That is where he became friends with Paul Allen,classmate with similar interests in technology (who would later become his business partner). He and his friends often studied Fortune Magazine. His favorite subjects were Math and Reading. He excelled in math.

Lakeside Private School was one of the first schools to have computers. His friends were overjoyed. They spent all the time they could on computers, reading manuals and creating software. He developed an early interest in computer science. He programmed a class scheduling program for the school and got paid $4,200. Their explorations and experiments banned them from the computer for several weeks.

Gates applied for Harvard, Yale, and Princeton Universities. He maxed out the Math section of the SAT. He was accepted to all three, but chose Harvard University. He was studying math and law. He was working to become a lawyer. In 1973, his freshman year, he met Steve Ballmer (current C.E.O. of Microsoft). While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair. In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen, and the rest, is history.
