And if someone feels this way, what steps should they take to bring some kind of meaningful resolution to their lives?

Life can seem bleak , we have all been there but the important thing is to concentrate on the good. Once you find happiness you think wow it was right in front of my eyes. Spend time in nature or with family(if they dont drive you crazy) just do what ever makes you feel happy.

If a friend of mine began to feel this way, I would try to encourage him/her to spend a bit of time doing charity work.

When I was really depressed once, I began going to a local shelter by myself and walking a dog. Different dog each time, once a week or so. I did it just to have somewhere to go and get some air but it ended up making me smile and began to make me feel good about myself.

Find something they care about - children, elderly, movies, etc. then ask them to come with you one day while you are volunteering at a local children's charity, retirement home, or community theatre.

It is amazing how good it feels to do something nice for someone else.
