I would take it to mean "How did Europeans contacting the Americas change both continents?"
IE How did the contact change Europe? and How did it change the Americas?

Not knowing much about what class and what grade level it's hard to say but I think maybe your teacher is asking how contact between the US and European countries changed both Europe and the US histroically, but if you have time, might be best to ask your teacher for clarification.
