Many wise guys shun sports futures like diabetics avoid sugar; there's too much built-in juice and gamblers don't like to tie up their money for an entire season.

Futures, however, can be fun wagers and smart birthday or Christmas gifts, especially for friends and family.

Can you think of more appropropriate stocking stuffers for North America's legion of long-suffering Cubs fans than futures tickets on their beloved Boys of Summer?

Sports handicappers advise that mid-to-late September is a good time to purchase NFL futures.

Each team has played two regular-season games, which means observers have had time for more than just a glimpse of what the 32 pro teams have to offer.

It's also not so late in the season that all value is gone, though if you plan to play futures, it's best to hurry before numbers plummet too far.

The Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook, for example, Monday lowered odds on Green Bay to win the Super Bowl from 50/1 to 30/1, the same as at Bodog Sportsbook, largely off The Pack's two early-season victories.

The Cheeseheads have tumbled all the way to 15/1 at Leroy's more than 60 Nevada stores.

And if you want to buy futures on current favorite New England, you really need to hustle buns.

A mid-week sampling of Sin City books revealed the Patriots were 3/1 at the Stratosphere Tower, but down to 7/4 at the Hilton.

They were 2/1 on Friday at Bodog Sportsbook.

New England was in the 6/1 range with San Diego and defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis when numbers originally were posted in mid-January, but Pats odds started to slide big-time when they acquired Randy Moss.

Professional Handicappers League member Jimmy Boyd says his best futures pick at this point is Denver, which is 2-0 after scoring late victories over Buffalo and Oakland, thanks largely to Jason Elam's foot.

The Broncos failed to cover each, though, laying 3 against the Bills and 9 1/2 versus the Raiders.

Denver is a 20/1 futures choice at Bodog Sportsbook as well as the Hilton and 18/1 at Leroy's sports books.

"The next best AFC team after New England and Indy just might be the Broncos," Boyd said.

"They could leapfrog the Chargers in the (AFC West) division.

"Their wins haven't been too impressive so far, but their defense is back and their offense will improve as the season goes on.

"They're a team that finds ways to win games.

"I chalk a lot of that up to (Coach Mike) Shanahan."

Oddsmaker Ken White, managing partner of Las Vegas Sports Consultants, doesn't particularly like Denver and thinks the Broncos are fortunate to be among the league's undefeated teams.

Denver is laying a field goal to Jacksonville this weekend.

"They've been cutting it close and won both their victories late, but their luck eventually will run out." White said.

"They're a 9 or 10-win team and I don't think they'll make the playoffs.

"The quarterback situation keeps generating a lot of talk.

"I don't think Denver has put together two really good seasons in a row since the (John) Elway years."

White and SuperBook supervisor Jeff Sherman both recommend taking a serious look at Pittsburgh, another 2-0 club.

The Steelers have wins over Cleveland and Buffalo.

They're 15/1 at Leroy's shops, 18/1 at BoDog Sportsbook and 20/1 at the SuperBook.

"They're playing very well," White said succinctly.

Pittsburgh is the only club Sherman seriously would consider purchasing a futures ticket on right now.

"I wouldn't bet the Pats because the odds are so low, especially after the way they beat San Diego," Sherman said.

"The Steelers, though, look a little enticing.

"That's the only thing I see.

"They're a 9-point favorite this week (against San Francisco).

"Certainly nobody in the NFC has any credibility.

"It's really difficult to look beyond the Top 3 (Pats, Colts and Bolts)."

Here is a list of teams that have won multiple Super Bowl Packers Broncos Cowboys Raiders Steelers Redskins 49ers Giants Patriots Colts Miami These are the teams with 2 or more wins, so if we're in Super Bowl 44 next year, it would add up to not every team has won a Super Bowl.
