how do you make friends in a city you know literaly no one?

please dont say things like "get into the gym". as seinfeld once wisely said (cant remember the exact words) - no one is knowing anyone in the gym or in the bookshop

What are your interests? Tennis, cooking, gardening, etc? Take a class in one of them. The other students will have the same interests. Volunteer at a hospital, or children center, or animal shelter. You will meet people there. When I first moved to "the big city" I didn't know anyone, but I loved to play bridge. I found two weekly tournaments and played 2 X per week. Made lots of friends. Good luck. Think of it as an adventure.
