I saw this article today in the LA Times, "Wedded to greed in India", that stated "Despite official efforts, grooms and in-laws still harass, torture and even kill brides over dowries. Rising affluence has only worsened the avarice. The practice of dowry in India goes back thousands of years. Its original intent, scholars say, was to protect women."

The article includes statistics for the violence against women in India: "In 2005, the most recent year for which figures are available, a woman was killed over dowry every 77 minutes in India, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. The total of such homicides was 6,787, but experts suspect that the true figure is much higher, because many dowry killings are not reported. Even when they are, most of the killers go unpunished."

Here's the article:

When will Indian women be protected from murder?

I'm well aware that US women are sexually assaulted, raped, beaten to death, and murdered every day. I ask about it regularly in this forum. And I've led marches and events about violence against women. Have you?

I usually don't ask questions about other countries, but since non-US people visit this forum, why can't the same questions be asked about another country?

In addition, US feminists are constantly being told that US women already have equality, and we're asked why don't know about what happening to women in the rest of the world, and why we don't care or do anything about it. I have done quite a few things about this issue, working with feminist organizations that support educators in the countries affected by FGM, such as: http://www.feminist.com/resources/artspeech/inter/fgm.htm
http://www.feminist.org/news/newsbyte/uswirestory.asp?id=10391
http://feministing.com/archives/007090.html
What have you done to support educators about FGM?

i love the people who turn this issue into a "i hate feminists, you suck feminists" approach. we're talking about HUMAN rights here since, yes, women are humans. we do have a right to try to help indian women. how are they any different than american women? some of you say, "leave the issue alone, it's their culture." i'm sorry, but since when is murdering innocent people an appropriate culture?by the way, i am not a christian and do not maintain that christianity will solve their problems. i would love to see these women rise up and defend themselves. something has to be done.

MafiaGirl, Good to see you here..

and to answer the question.. Western media finds the worst story that happened in some remote village of India and portray it like that country is third world and thats the only thing that happens in this country..

And people like you who ask question listen to that media and stay ignorant.. Sorry I have to be bluntly honest

To give you and example.. media in other countries portray that all girls in west get pregnant at 15, and families are broken.. Do you think this is true ? Well not.. a few times but not like 90% .. So stop reading these news papers and posting ignorant questions..

One of my groups in medical sociology has that issue for their group project! This is a horrible practice condoned by stupid people.

Rudey you equate drinking beer with murder? Tell me what part of your religion or culture allows this?

We do have a right to support human rights.

The only way drinking too much beers hurts anyone but the drinker is if they drink and drive and we are doing something about that!

Edit:
Troll shark you are cute smart a**! And sometimes you really hit the mark!

Rudey, your rant about preservation of culture and religion and butting out of other people's cultures is sadly misplaced. There is no country in the world where the women feel it is ok to burn, tortue and harass them for dowry. Thinking that they the women love these non-civil, animal-like treatments because it is a century old tradition or because it is tied to their religion shows a lack of sensitivity towards humans

Yeah protect women. Well of course they still have the caste system- they will be backward as long as they keep these things. India is a third world country.

It may unfortunately continue until Indian women have the right to keep and bear arms. Or until some of these women have the courage to burn the women beating cowards in their beds. Women are beautiful and fascinating, to be respected and treated with dignity.

It amazes me how all these anti-feminists on this forum just want to blow it of as unimportant when atrocities happen to women, but boy here em scream when a little injustice happens to them.
