Biotic potential is at its greatest when the population has its highest birthrate and lowest mortality. It's the capacity of the population to reproduce and have the offspring survive.

What factors affect the birthrate?
1. Number of offspring produced at a time ... hundreds of eggs at a time like frogs and fish or one at a time like people and elephants?
2. Period of time between birth events ... soon like mice or longer between like people and elephants?
3. Age at which reproduction begins ... after 20 minutes like bacteria or 15-20 years like people
4. Ratio of females to males in the population ... more females ---> more offspring

What factors affect survival of the offspring?
1. Supply of various resources like food, shelter, water, territory
2. Predators and parasites
3. Diseases
4. Pollution
5. Habitat loss
6. Natural phenomena like hurricanes, landslides, earthquakes, droughts
