When he gets caught the punishment, whether felony or misdemeanor larceny, will depend on the value of what he has just stolen. You should find out what means of credit or collateral he used to get the rental items in the first place, as that is what the rental agency will go after first. I'm guessing he did not use his own Platinum Amex if he's doing such short-sighted scams. The real question is - what's fueling his desire for quick cash? Was he suddenly compelled to donate cash to an orphanage? Unlikely. Was he trying to get quick cash without considering the consequences because he has a drug addition? This is much more likely regardless of what he has told you. Drug addition makes people do some unfathomably senseless things - and this is a winning example. If he's addicted to drugs, he could be using needles or be involved in other high risk money making activities. As bad (and stupid) as pawning off rental items may seem, you'd best consider the larger picture of how much worse all the other things you don't know about could be and get away while you are still safe. People rarely do things like this for no reason and it would seem improbable that this is the first time he has done anything like this.

It depends on the contract he has with the rental company. If the contract states that the rented merchandise cannot be used as collateral or sold, then he will have to pay the rental company for their losses. They will sue. As far as the pawn shop, they can't press charges, but they won't allow him to do business with their shop again. If the rental contract doesn't have any terms about collateral or selling (which I doubt) then nothing will happen. Jail time is doubtful unless the value of the goods is in the thousands.

Yes, you're right he has a problem - he's a thief. That's a big problem. Eventually the rental place will come after him for not returning the items, and when he can't come up with them, he'll have to pay for them or else they're likely to call the police, and prosecute him. He can go to jail for this.
You might consider whether he's a real good bet for a boyfriend.

Jail time and fine! He obviously has no respect for other people's property and he sure knows what he was doing. You should stay away from this person as he will get you into trouble sooner or later.

That's stealing.
He's a thief.
When he's caught he will most likely do time in jail for theft.
I think it's time for a new boyfriend.

This is called "theft." Tell him to redeem the items and return them, or he's going to find himself in prison!
