Some printers come with a utility that tell you the estimated ink level. They are notoriously unreliable. Ink cartidges are often significantly heavier than the ink inside, it is difficult to tell by weight. Taking the cartridge out and shaking it is liable to get ink in places you would rather it wasn't. Besides, taking it out and putting back in usually convinces the printer that you inserted a new cartridge. Remember I said the estimates were unreliable?
Best bet is to keep a fresh spare on hand, and replace it when it no longer makes marks on the paper.

Mick,
There isn't a generic answer to this one. Could you please give me more information? Like what is the brand of your printer, and the model number? If you give me that information I may be able to point you in the right direction. I know that my printers ink cartridges are not transparent, and for sure I wouldn't know if I took them out how much ink there was left by the weight of them. My printer is an HP, and I also have Nec SilentWriter Laser printer. The HP has a program that if I want to check the ink levels I just open the program and go through the proper steps to see the current level. If the level is getting low, generally a box will pop up in the lower right hand corner of the screen with a bar graph of the current levels. So please add the information I have asked for and I might be able to at least point you in the right direction to find out about how your printer tracks ink levels.

My printer tells me when the ink is low, but you can always remove the cartridge and look at it. The cartridges are transparent, so you can see what's inside. Also, once the cartridge is out, you can shake it a little, this seems to help extend the life of the ink.
