I tend to shut anything that I don't need, absolutely, to be running. I use Firefox and I found that a lot of the add-on extensions were making it run slowly, and when iTunes was on at the same time, things were slowing down. So, I uninstalled extensions that I didn't need, and I shut down any other applications that did not have to be running, and the performance was much better. Also, using the visualizer can slow things down a bit -- depending on how much memory you have, etc., especially is other things are running.

Make sure you have the latest edition of iTunes. Make sure you have plenty of ram (1 gb minimum). Try not to run all of your other applications at the same time. And run disk utility in your utlity folder. Have it repair your permissions. All should then be well.
