I think this is a good metaphor for survival. I don't belive that one would learn how to fly, because that might take many generations of evolution. But, I DO believe that the person would have a strong will to live and attempt to climb out. Or that person would come to accept their position and achieve inner peace.

Probably not, but if a million people fell down a bottomless pit with enough food and water to sustain there life while falling so they could actual procreate. It wouldn't surprise me if eventually some of the women started having children that were better suited for it.
