It's called propaganda. The mainstream media and the U.S. government are in the same bed. Both are heavily influenced(if not run) by the Israeli/Zionist lobby. They will do whatever it takes to discredit anyone who speaks out against the interest of their ultimate goals.
And for those of you who want to know what he really said, here goes:
"The regime occupying Jerusalem must be eliminated"

Translation is a real beast.
But whether he said they must be eliminated from the pages of history or that the regime will collapse or that they will be wiped away, the implication is still the same.
By whatever means available and by whomsoever, israel must go.
This is why when you are on the political stage, you MUST choose carefully.
Since we have to rely upon translators to tell us what it is all about, anyone with an axe to grind can make it say as they wish.
Adding to this is his rather provocative stands on the rest of the world and it becomes quite easy to believe that he wants Israel to be no more

You may be correct in asserting that this statement is not a direct quote - however, your argument is a pedantic one. The following are direct quotes from Amadinejad - and if I were to sum them up in one sentence, I'd have to say that Amadinejad would agree whole heartily with the alleged misquote that you allude to.
"We don't shy away from declaring that Islam is ready to rule the world.“
“This regime (Israel) will one day disappear.”
“The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm.”
Israel is "a disgraceful stain on the Islamic world"
Israel is doomed to be "wiped from the map" in "a war of destiny."
Ahmadinejad said that "the countdown for the destruction of Israel" has begun.
Zionists are "the personification of Satan.“
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that the Holocaust is a “myth.” “Them (the West) invented the myth of the massacre of the Jews and placed it above Allah, religions and prophets"

Why is it that whenever I hear an Islamic apologist, I always envision them sounding like this:
How dare anyone out there make fun of Ahmy, after all he has been through! He lost some of his people when he executed them, he doesn't believe in the Holocost. He has three kids. His imam advisor turned out to be a user, a cheater, and now he's going through a custody battle. All you people care about is….. Dubya and making money off of him. HE’S A HUMAN! What you don’t realize is that Ahmy is making you all this money and all you do is write a bunch of &$@$ about him. He hasn't made sense in years. His speech is called “more American and Zionist monkeys and pigs must die" for a reason because all you people want is MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE, MORE!. LEAVE HIM ALONE! You are lucky he even spoke to you ^#(*$#@$! LEAVE AHMY ALONE!…..Please.
Mr. Bollinger talked about professionalism and said if Ahmy was a professional dictator, he would’ve pulled it off no matter what. Speaking of professionalism, when is it professional to publicly bash someone who is going through a hard time. Leave Ahmy Alone Please…. ! Leave Mahmoud Ahmy alone!…right now!….I mean it! Anyone that has a problem with him you deal with me, because he is not well right now. LEAVE HIM ALONE!

Because the US public won't look past the headlines. I think the man's a turd, myself, but we are so focused on what we want to hear - what megamedia tells us - we never hear the truth.
There are a lot of filters standing between what actually occurs and what is reported. The worst of these filters is our own experience or lack of it.
... not to mention one of his rockets almost killed a few buddies of mine the other day.

There are different interpretations of his original quote -- which wasn't in English originally-- and the "wiped off the map" is one possible interpretation.
But people miss the point -- he said it to be provocative -- to get people riled up and to inflame passions -- both in his country and abroad.
