Whenever they need it. If you need a number, I was 5th grade when I started wearing one.

I have a 10 yr old daughter, and a 10 yr old step-daughter. They have both been wearing training bras and sports bras for about 6 mos now. Actually my step-daughter needed one at 9, so she has been wearing one longer. Girls today are developing a lot sooner. I, personally, would take her out shopping (just the girls), and let her pick a couple out. This would be a bonding experience for both of you, and let her know that she can come to talk to you about these things, and not be embarrassed.

Age doesn't really matter. When a girl begins to develop, she should start using a training bra. Then as she grows, when the time is right she should switch over to a regular bra. There is no set age because every girl can develop at different times and rates.

5th grade is right on target! All the girls in my class had bras and where proud of it; except me.
One girl always made a comment how I didn't own a bra. Some girls do start a lot earlier like in 4th grade.
I was "budding" boobs which my step-mom either didn't notice or didn't care. I walked around with my shoulders shrugged so no one could see my boobs. My dad always notices and gave me a big "whack" on my back (which hurt like hell) so that I would straighten up. Eventually, I had to ask my step-mom to buy me a couple of training bras.
P.S.: Buy your first bra. Don't take a hand-me-down. It's like the best experience in the world!
(Not to mention that it's not really healthy to use someone Else's underwear.)
Happy shopping!

appropriately if you can see your chest or nipples through your shirt you should wear a training bra or undershirt... bras should be worn for support and coverage with small breast... you don't want to be inapproriate, and you don't want to have to wear bras before your time... because it will be for the rest of your life... and they are not as fun as TV makes them out to be...
Look at yourself in the mirror... if you can see your breast or nipples through your shirt, first try an undershirt... then a training bra... make sure it is your size... Your friend did a nice thing, but you want to make sure it fits for coverage right now so that you are not showing through your shirt...
bee safe, and welcome to womanhood... unfortunately, it gets a little harder from here on...

It definately depends on when the girl starts developing both physically and emotionally. Physically, obvious enough. But, emotionally, many girls start wearing training bras before they "need" to simply because they feel ready for it.

Age isn't really the issue, it's the girls state of development. My 8 year old has to wear one but my niece didn't need one until she was 12.

it doesnt depend on age but when breasts start growing. my daughter started at beginning of year 8 but i had to persuade her she wasnt keen which i thought was really unusual. i would have been so happy if my mum had suggested i wear a bra when i was her age. anyway shes used to it now.
