The three categories of sedimentary rock formation are Clastic, Biochemical, and Chemical Precipitation.

Clastic sediments are eroded from other pre-existing rock, then deposited in layers and hardened into stone. Sandstone is an example of clastic sedimentary rock.

Biochemical sediments are deposited through the action of living organisms. Stromatolites are biochemical sedimentary rocks.

Chemical precipitate sediments result from dissolved minerals coming out of solution and depositing (precipitating) in layers. Halite is a chemical precipitate sedimentary rock.

When rocks are worn away by wind, rain and freezing fractures as well as grinding by glaciers they may form sand, silt and clay that flows by streams and rivers to a quiet body of water such as a lake or sea. There the particles can settle out of the water to the bottom and form loose layers of sediment. Over great periods of time the particles may become cemented together and harden into sedimentary rock. All sedimentary rock grew at one time as horizontal layers but as mountains are pushed up out of the earth by techtonic plate forces, the sedimentary rock may be found at all degrees of slope and can even be found at the tops of the highest mountains. The mountain tops used to be under the sea!
