There are still pirates today...

The pirates have been active later also- Especially from the 1200's to the 1800's. Some are still terrorizing mariners to this day. There is a joke about statisticians. They make an argument that the lessening of the pirate population is in ratio to global warming. No global warming issues with lots of pirates and with less pirates much more. Just to show figures don't lie but liars figure.

There are probably more pirates around today than there ever were in the past. Piracy around many of the islands in the Indonesian and Philippine archipelagoes and through southeast Asia is a major problem.

Probably ever since ships were used for commerce until the present day. I can't give a specific period of time as I don't know when the first recorded piracy took place. Piracy is still common however.
