No one knew.No o ne ever knows when it comes to war.. But if we had gone in with the right equipment and gone in to win it would have been over a long time ago.
It is just like Vietnam. Worried more about the Citizens than our own men. Now they are the enemy and Iraq Citizens are given ice cream and cake.

May be your question should have who did not know? Then it would have been easier to answer. As we all knew now body takes to having his homeland invaded by foreign powers. Therefore we the people of the world knew it would last as long as foreign armies stay in their land. As for cost the people responsible for that are neo cons who have made money out of it. So as usual the poor are paying the cost in lives as well as funding the war. So therefore to avoid this sort of thing happening again may be you in US should hold Bush and company accountable to this illegal war may be few years in slammer would stop any future illegal war.

Anyone who thought it wouldn't was simply being unrealistic probably because they were ill-informed to begin with, mistakenly believed our president somehow magically shared in their personal agendas for the nation and to this day have no concept of the importance of our remaining in Iraq.
I haven't seen the news clips on the Iranian president's comments at Cambridge today but I have heard that he spoke of 'peace and love' for the first time since taking office.
Funny the effect that having us Americans camped out on his border has had upon the man.
And, yes, we can thank Bush for his new outlook and demeanor - no one else.

Rumsfeld was very clear about how long. "Six days or six weeks; I doubt six months", and Wolfowitz was very clear on the cost; Iraq's oil was going to pay for its resurrection.
I guess membership in PNAC doesn't guarantee you'll be right.

Applause for McKenzie. I object to your play on words ChiGuy and your continued effort to bash reasonable opinions. McKenzie's answer mirrors my own so I will let that stand.

Paul O'Neill did.
He was Bushs' first Secretary of the Treasury. Bush/Cheney fired him for honestly and accurately predicting the cost and duration of PNAC's little Iraq pipe dream.

Good point! Look at what happened to Marie Antoinette when she said "let them eat cake"... and she didn't even promise cake! We on the other hand were told it was all about cake and we haven't seen it yet.

i did...to solve this problem, the trick is to muzzle nancy pelosi and the pelosi reid regime and allow WORKING americans who know of and understand the real threat of al qaeda to finish this war without fear of interference from out of control liberal extremists.
