Hi,
There are two ways you can enter "x" depending on what you want the "x" to represent.
1) Just press the button below MODE, the one with [X, T, O, n] on it.
2) Press ALPHA; then the key with the x above it (the STO, key).
If you're thinking about solving the problem for x, there are a couple ways you can do it:
1) Enter the equation solved for 3x+4x -14 = 0 and graph it. The find where the graph crosses the x-axis. (There are several ways of doing that, which I won't go into.)
2) You can also solve the problem from the home screen but for a simple problem like this, it's not worth the trouble. For more complex problems you can solve them as follows:
a) You have to get Solve( from the catalog by pressing 2ND, CATALOG, S; then scrolling to Solve( and pressing ENTER.
b) Enter the equation so that the entry looks like this:
Solve(3x+4x-14, x, 2) ,where the isolated x is the variable to be solved for and 2 is a guess of the value.
c) Press ENTER and the answer will be given.

Hope this solve your problem.
