It should be controlled like alcohol and cigarettes and legal in all cases.

Yes, it should be legal, w/out a script. It grows from a plant, there are also many other things we could use hemp for, instead of cutting down all of our forests. Stinking alcohol is legal and look at how many people have died from that.
There are a bunch of things we could benefit from if marijuana was legal and hemp was utilized more.
Umm....America, the part you smoke isn't what is used to make paper, clothing, etc. Marijuana grows way faster than regular trees, and if there wasn't such a big deal being made about it being illegal, our economy and environment could benefit. So I'm called a hippie because I agree with it being legal, whatever, I'm sure you would label me a liberal too. But that's ok.

Well we already treat social anxiety disorder and depression with alcohol so why not? At least you can't OD on marijuana and it doesn't impair your driving ability nearly as much.
Personally I think it should be legal and we should collect the taxes on it. If that did happen I don't think it would be for a long time. The WWII generation needs to die off first before something like that would have a chance of getting through average America. I don't necessarily condone marijuana smoking, but there are a lot worse things in our society that are legal.

I find it so amazing that my doc could prescribe morphine, but not pot.
Well, *my* doc could prescribe pot, being in a medical marijuana state, but the feds aren't too happy with us about it. Besides, who wants to be on a govt list as a dope smoker?
I honestly believe that pot is a far safer drug than alcohol - no one gets stoned and gets into a fight. I think it should be legalized, period. Legalize it, regulate it, and tax the Hades out of it.
Edit - to those of you saying there are alternatives, I say BS. Mother Nature's medicine cabinet is *always* preferable, in my opinion, to man-made crap. Plus, if *you* don't have a serious health condition, what makes you think you're qualified to tell someone who does what works or doesn't? As someone who *does* have a chronic health condition, I don't think the feds - or my neighbors - need to meddle in something best left to me and my doctors.

It's BS. We ought to legalize small amounts for recreational use (or not) and research the stuff for medical use. Overriding the FDA approval process is a terrible idea. Some years ago, the Tennessee medical board had a ban on the use of Phen-Fen for weight loss, and the legislature passed a law circumventing them, only to have the cardiac problems with the drugs show up only a few months later. We have systems in place to deal with these issues, and we ought to leave the systems alone.

If someone is very ill or dying, I'm 100% for letting them do anything that makes their life more comfortable. As long as it's not hurting anyone, what's the big deal?
edit: The people who think there are better alternatives, could you please explain? The reason marijuana is even used medically is because almost all the alternatives cause a lot of nausea and dizziness. They report that they don't get that with marijuana.

This issue and so many others should not even be an issue. Our federal government was not given the right to tell people what they can and cannot do. It should be a local and state issue. Thats what the constitution calls for. Limited government and individual freedom. Responsibility lies with the individual and they can make their mind up on the dangers of such activities and make their own choice. Unfortunatly our politicians have strayed from the constitution and you get what we got.
Time for revolution, start below, feel the passion of being a patriot.

I think it's funny. I live in California and I can tell you it's a total scam to skirt federal law. Perfectly healthy people walk down the streets of San Francisco smoking a joint and the locals do nothing. Every once in a while the feds swoop in and make raids on a few clubs, and then a few new clubs spring up next week. I know a guy who got a prescription because of "Anxiety". The more he smoked, the more "Anxious" he got. So he smoked more. .....until he wound up in a locked ward. It's great fun watching the feds and the locals go round and round, and people destroy themselves

EDIT: Wow Heather, how hippy of you. Why would someone make a 4 inch length of rope out of a gnarly skunk bud that would get them high for a week? ....but then again, the strains that don't get you high are what would be used for paper and rope etc..... Those were originally included in the law because of lobbying from the paper industry.

I believe it should be legal. For those who say there are plenty of alternatives... perhaps so, but look at the side-effects particularly when medicines are combined. For some people, marijuana is the only thing that works for the nausea associated with chemotherapy and I think it's cruel to deprive them of a medicinal plant that alleviates their suffering.

Legalize it, regulate it, tax it. As for people who would grow it illegally, there ae folks who make "bathtub gin" illegally, and I'm pretty sure the law frowns on them, too.
Hemp and marijuana are botanically cousins, but there is no psychoactive effect of consuming hemp. Hemp makes pretty good cloth, too. Hemp is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids for us veg*an types.
Damn, I can't believe I actually agree with someone who calls herself PNAC Penelope!

Controlling marijuana is an absolute absurdity ! This stuff should be treated just like alcohol.! You do not have it available for people under the drinking age! You do not smoke and drive! You do not smoke while working !
Other than those restrictions, it should be available to anyone who wants to indulge, provided they're prepared to face the consequences for their actions while under it's influence. Just like alcohol!
