systems of equations

x+y = 10
x-y = -2

add the two equations to cancel the y variable out

x + y = 10
+ x - y =-2
----------------------
2x = 8
x = 4

solve for y (you can use either equation)

x + y = 10
4 + y = 10
y = 6

x = 4
y = 6

Adding gives:-
2x = 8
x = 4

4 + y = 10
y = 6

x = 4 , y = 6

2X= 8
X = 8 / 2 , . X = 4

2Y = 12
Y = 12 / 2 , Y = 6

REMEMBER WHEN YOU CANCEL YOU HAVE TO CHANGE FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITE OR VICEVERSA.

4 + 6 = 10
4 - 6 = -2

I'm gonna guess you're trying to solve for x and y.

Isolate one of the variables in one of your equations, and plug it into the other equation. Basically, move everything except for one variable onto one side. Then, because you know what one of your variable equals, you can insert that into your other equation. Hope this helps.

What's the question? "How do you solve this for x and y"? Go add the two equations together and you're left with 2x = 8, which you can solve for x and then use that x in either of the original equations to solve for y.

x-y=-2
isolating x
x=-2+y

x+y=10

x=-2+y
so:
(-2+y)+y=10
-2+2y=10
2y=12
y=6

x+y=10
y=6
x+6=10
x=4

x=4,y=6
