How does that picture from iwo Jima of the soliders rasing the flag show bravery?

The best answer I can think is to refer you to the two movies Clint Eastwood directed on the subject, "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima". The first is told from the American point of view, the second from the Japanese. However, I think the symbolism of the picture is more of triumph than of bravery.

At the time,America was in serious economic trouble and in need of money. The Department of War needed help in rallying the general public to buy Defense Bonds to raise the needed revenue or we could have lost the war. This photo of the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima was that ralling point.

when the us marines who climbed mount Surabachi started up the mountain there were 250 of them. when the mountain had been secured there were 25 left alive, but the mountain had been taken despite 90% losses. that's bravery.
