How are you connecting to the internet? If, for instance, you have a dial-up account, McAfee is trying to update itself before you're connected to the internet (by default security software starts up when you start your computer). If you have the option to "retry" on the error pop-up, connect to the internet and then click the "retry" button to complete the updates. You might want to shut off "automatic updates" in McAfee to prevent the error message from coming back. Just remember to do the updates yourself.

If you leave your computer off for a day or more it will miss an upgrade and needs to download updates. I get this error message any time I a am gone for a few days and leave the computer off. With no way to download upgrades online.
