Right now I'm confused. My first novel takes place in a Maximum Security Prison, and I don't know which point of view to use. Which one woudl you use for a story liek this? I have tried Omniscent 3rd person, and I didn't seem to have problems with that, but I just want ot get your opinion.
Thanks ahead of time

Third person Omniscient is probably your best call. That way, you can report on things happening from all angles. If you choose first person or third person limited, you are going to have a hard time considering the concept of a Maximum Security Prison is to separate people and limit their contact with others. Another way to go might be using first person, but changing the person from chapter to chapter. Maybe you write one chapter from a guard's point of view - "on the outside looking in" and then the next chapter from the point of view of a prisoner on the inside. You could also write from the POV of different prisoners - one a hardened repeat offender and the other a first timer wrongly accused. They would have very different POV's and that could be very interesting as an approach. Pax - C

Is it vital to the plot line for the reader to know things the main character doesn't? If so, use omniscient.
If the reader needs to have access only to the thoughts, feelings, actions, etc of the main character, the limited consciousness 3rd person point of view might work. It anchors the reader to the character.
I think you are wise not to use the 1st person, it is difficult to pull off successfully.
