Why would removing some of the soil from the north side of the tower reduce the lean?

If you take soil away from that side, the tower eases gently back toward the vertical. Make a model in a sandbox and see how it would work. It is a very delicate process with the tower. Hope this helps.

Take a tall tin can out into the backyard. Build up a little platform and establish the tin can on an angle similar to that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Now excavate some of the soil from the north side and see what happens.
If you don't feel like going outside and getting grubby, you can do this with a pop bottle and a package of cereal, or you can draw sketches, like a cartoon sequence, and show what happens as you excavate.
