I got a betta fish the other day. It is female [atleast what the PetSmart container said] And it is so small. I mean, small. it is one inch long [head to tail] And it is almost see through [its white with red tail] Is this a baby or just a small betta?

I have had about 7 bettas in the past but never seen one this small.

Your fish is probably a juvenile - females are sold at around 6 months old.

Are the other fins red as well? This color pattern would be called a "Cambodian" - light body with colored fins. I had a blue Cambodian male at one time: http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_colors.htm

I noticed the same thing the last time I was in PetSmart, the female bettas were unusually young. Mose male bettas that you see in the pet stores are around 8 months old as it takes about that long for all their fins to fully grow in. Females are a little different as they do not get long flowing fins (the main selling feature for many people) so breeders and pet stores do not have to wait so long before they sell them. It is really a a shame that males are usually so old when people get them. Young bettas are like Jack Russells, full of life and energy and always on the move! Enjoy your female (her coloring is called Cambodian by the way) she will get bigger quickly in good water and with good food and you will get to have her around a little longer than most bettas as you got her at such an early stage of her life. Good luck.

It is most likely a baby female betta. Take good care of it and do NOT put it in a small bowl. Contact me if you have any questions.

Yes, you probably have purchased a female. They are usually the smaller breed.
It is most likely very young, and that is why it's colours aren't fully developed, try feeding her frozen bloodworms
