Caps or Pen Caps are part of the pen that is placed over the nib end when not in use. Protects the nib from damage & everything else from ink. Referring to the cap as a lid or top is just as "criminal" as referring to the nib as a tip or point.

To keep the ink from leaking onto clothes, papers, etc. especially if it is a type of gel ink. The caps prevent the ink from drying up inside too (you leave it off for very long, no matter what you do, the pen will not write even though it may be brand new). Trust me--I know from experience of having homework ruined by leaky pens. YUCK

If not to keep the pen from drying out, they help to keep the point of the pen from accidentally marking up clothing or furniture.

like, they keep the ink from drying out... (even with ball-point pens)...
and if you put the pen in your pocket without the cap, you get ink all over your shirt and look like a nerd...
and then your shirt is all wet from ink and it feels gross...
and the ink gets inside onto your body and everything, bleah.
And it ruins the shirt.

it keeps them from drying, avoid the flow of the ink, and if pen doesn't have caps, how could you bring it on your pocket, and how if it writes on your shirt saying..... hey men.... **** ..... lol
