when buying text books online, what does it mean when they say paperback?

That it's not a "hardcover" book - it has a paper front and back cover rather than a hard cover. That's why they're usually cheaper.

Paperback is a cheaper version of the book. Mostly the paper they use is brown-colored paper which is cheaper than the normal white one you usually see.

Good thing : Cheaper
Bad thing : not so durable and not look nice

But if you don't mind, BUY the paperback version. Cos I DO too :)
