I have a pair of Clark's leather mules that I have worn for a long time. They unfortunately stink, and I cannot get the smell out. I have sprayed foot deoderant in the shoe and that does not help. I would love to wear these shoes to work but I don't want to gross anyone out! I don't think that I can wash them because they are leather. Is this pair a goner? Thank you for your time!

THIS REALLY WORKS!!
Put one or two pieces of charcoal in each shoe and place in a closed paper bag. Leave shoes in bag for a couple of days. No more smell...
Best way to keep shoes from ever getting the stinky smell in the first place is to store your most-worn shoes overnite with charcoal in them, either in the box they came in or a paper bag.
Bamboo charcoal shoe inserts are available (I bought some in China and I love 'em!) but everyday charcoal for the grill works as well. Just dont buy the "hickory" or flavored charcoals or you'll walk around smelling like a Bar-B-Q.

Just stick 1/2-1 cup baking soda and let sit for a few days if the smell is really bad. Dump it out and wear as usual. Do that every night to prevent it from happening again.

I like the sound of the answer from Swan Granny- I think I will have to do some testing at my workshop with charcoal. It makes sense as charcoal is basically what is in fishtank filters to absorb all sorts of chemicals and odors.
Cool answer for small items!
We use a giant ozone machine for odor like cat urine etc on sofas.

I have also heard of fabric sheets in shoes. I would think that only masks the odor. Normally, the cushion (under the foot) in the shoe holds the majority of odor. Replace cushion.

I saw on tv that if you put your shoes in a plastic bag in the freezer overnite it kills the bacteria that makes the smell.
