Perhaps there was a climate change. The "Garden of Eden" was believed to be in present day Iraq. There is a theory that parts of Egypt had a much wetter climate, and some say that there are water erosion marks on the Sphinx. So, it is likely the climate between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers was also different.

There are legitimate archaeologists who actively search for it to this very day. The most common belief is that it was somewhere in the heart of Africa, where, even in the scientific community, life is believed to have began. So, either it is still out there somewhere, undiscovered and being guarded by mythical creatures or it is just a story like unicorns or the adventures of hercules.
