He never went to college in the sense that he got a Ph.D. someplace. When his family moved to St. Petersburg briefly, he studied chemistry with a Prof. Nikolai Nikolaievich Zinin there. Later, he studied chemistry with Prof. Theophile-Jules Pelouze at the University of Torino.
