Freedom costs everything.

Some give their lives so others may be free, while others live their entire lives ensuring that those who have freedom can keepthat freedom.

It all depends on context. Individual freedom may cost a person his/her life if the government is a dictatorship. In contrast, under a democracy with freedoms (guaranteed--e.g., freedom of speech, press, expression, etc.), freedom cost nothing but the conscious struggle to keep them and not allow an administration to take them from you (since they are guaranteed)--See Bush Administration and Patriot Act for examples that must be resisted.

"A person willing to give up essential liberty in an attempt to gain security, deserves neither liberty nor safety." Ben Franklin

"History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid." Ike
"Freedom is the last, best hope of earth." Abe
Depends on what you believe. I mean do the above quotes mean much to you, or are they just something nice to think about on July 4th. I myself think they mean alot, that is one of the reasons I am in the military. For some people it costs them everything, and to them it is worth it, even if they do not get the chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The ones that are important in their lives get to. That is what is important to me. My family is free, and as a result so is the rest of the country.

Freedom costs whatever we are willing to give to it. That old saying "Give me liberty or give me death!" became popular because people were willing to die for freedom. The question isn't so much about freedom in modern terms, but rather about dignity. We supposedly have freedom, but human dignity is so wrapped up in freedom that the priciples and precepts upon which our ancestors died for means so much more than the intellects that decipher it, and psyches that tried to comprehend it! Freedom is the foundation of the utopian world. We are far from utopia, but all the same, we are one step closer, and although some think that we need to further ourselves evolutionarily, I disagree. We have everything we need in todays world to achieve utopia, excpet one thing--the letting go of old ideas for ones we are just now beginning to grasp.

Good question! Good Luck in your future growth.

Freedom is an illusion, or a delusion. None of us are free. This is true of freedom politically, or freedom philosophically.

Philosophically, the individual is "free" to act without restraint from the government. As long as there is government there is restraint. Few people are willing to advocate for a government-free society.

Well if we all worked together it would be free for all, but unfortunately we humans have a primal hierarchy trait that we haven't escaped yet. Once we evolve our consciousness we might have a chance.
