In World War I Belgium was neutral and they rejected Germany's demand to use Belgium as an invasion route into France. Britain had treaty ties guaranteeing the neutrality of Belgium. So then Britain warned Germany to call off the planned invasion by midnight of August 4, 1914 or the two countries would be at war. Germany's ruler, Kaiser Wilhelm, pretty much just laughed at Britain and they invaded Belgium anyway. Then the Britain and Germany were at war.

easy enough...most french defenses (Maginot-line etc) were at the german-french border. By invading Belgium, they could outflank the french. (and they were more able to drive back the aiding British quickly)
this was the case both before WW I and WW II. Before WW II, the french were convinced the german armour couldn't advance through the woods/hills of the Ardennes.

In WWI they invaded it to get to France. It would make it easy for logestics and attacking from more directions
In WWII They wanted all Europe. And later the rest of the world.

As a diversion to lure the BEF and best French divisions forward, in the meantime their main attack came in the Ardennes Forrest, thus cutting the allied line in two and trapping the BEF and french divisions who had advanced into the Low Countries....
